Group Staff William Sutton Transportation
Planner As a
Transportation Planner, William Sutton
supports projects by collecting and analyzing data, creating GIS maps,
conducting research, and writing reports. Selected Experience As a
graduate research assistant for Virginia Tech, Mr. Sutton researched public policy
initiatives including local climate change action plans, regional governance
in risk assessment and identification, and sustainable development for
natural hazards. He managed course
work and grading requirements for a class of 18 graduate students including
the development of a new grading rubric that allows students to compare and
contrast the differences and similarities between each student's GIS
generated maps and written reports. He
communicated with local municipalities to collect GIS data and research the
feasibility of incorporating local planning projects into the classroom. As a
planning intern at Blacksburg Transit, Mr. Sutton maintained transit shapefiles in ArcGIS leading to
the development of updated transit shapefiles to
implement on the town of Blacksburg's WebGIS
server. He regularly updated bus stop
inventory database and created a published version leading to accessibility
for all transit personnel. He also
assisted with comprehensive ridership study for transit route expansion by
attending community interest meetings, maintaining ridership survey
databases, developing maps illustrating ridership
and route effectiveness, and presenting the results to the transit
director. Other professional planning
experience has included: · City of Bristol,
Virginia - critically evaluated downtown historic neighborhood through
community surveying, housing stock inventory, transportation demand, and walkability analysis to generate recommendations for
housing rehabilitation, open-space plans, and streetscape improvements. · City of Roanoke,
Virginia - identified vacant parcels to produce maps, utilizing ArcGIS to identify infill development opportunities
within historic downtown neighbors. · Floyd County,
Virginia - developed corridor study of Route 8 within Floyd County to produce
future develop-ability maps based on a comprehensive study of all land
parcels, public participation through community mapping, focus groups, and
survey of business owners, along with analysis of current and potential
future markets. · Town of Blacksburg,
Virginia - created and completed a walkability and
streetscape analysis of downtown Blacksburg's Main Street corridor to
identify areas for improvements. ·
Virginia Chapter of the American Planning Association -
created and managed survey of all public planning agencies in Virginia to
determine the role of technology in the work place, best practices of
technology implementation, and the effectiveness of technology in public
participation. |
