Melissa Kim

Transportation Analyst
Bethesda Office

As a Transportation Analyst, Melissa Kim supports projects by collecting and analyzing data, creating GIS maps, conducting research, and writing reports.

Selected Experience

As an intern at KFH Group, Inc., Ms. Kim conducted bus stop facilities inventory and assessment in the greater Washington DC area for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA). The inventory and assessment involved collecting information on accessibility, safety, amenities, and signage.  Ms. Kim was also on a project team to develop a methodology to assess pedestrian walk paths to transit stops for accessibility and ADA compliance.

Since joining KFH Group as a full-time Transportation Analyst, Ms. Kim has been involved in developing a regional bus stop database for the Washington, DC region.  She provided oversight on the reconciliation and integration of bus stop information into a single uniform dataset under contract with WMATA.  Ms. Kim also provided assistance in the development of a transit development plan for the District of Columbia’s Circulator bus service, including assisting in the review of the National Park Service’s Tourmobile existing and planned service.

Ms. Kim has worked on five-year transit development plans for three Virginia cities (Winchester, Harrisonburg, and Chincoteague), one Virginia service area (Mountain Empire Older Citizens), and one Maryland city (Ocean City). Within these plans, she composed accompanying cartographic representations and data tables pertaining to existing and proposed services, and provided oversight and assistance in the collection of ridership data. She has also assisted in the updating of the Vermont Public Transit Policy Plan. Her efforts include analysis of current transit service and the creation of demographic maps as well as maps ranking highest relative transportation needs within the state.

Ms. Kim assisted in data collection and database development and management for the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments/Transportation Planning Board Transportation Clearinghouse. Her efforts included contacting over two hundred specialized transportation providers in the greater Washington Metropolitan area and reviewing respondents’ data before its submittal to COG/TPB for inclusion in the Clearinghouse.

As an intern at Cornish Associates, Ms. Kim provided assistance in the company’s effort to come up with design strategies to revitalize Kennedy Plaza, a plaza in the heart of downtown, as a part of the long-term revitalization strategy for Providence’s Downcity. This process involved conducting case studies of successful urban public spaces and their designers, conducting stakeholder interviews and developing a list of place making principles. This information was used to develop possible design strategies and event planning ideas that could be used in the plaza’s revitalization.

Ms. Kim’s undergraduate coursework included geographic information systems (GIS), quantitative research methods, history of the urban built environment, and historic preservation. While abroad in Rome, Italy, she participated in a studio project to develop strategies for a Roman neighborhood, Acqua Bullicante’s, integration issues.  Ms. Kim was the recipient of the “Best in Cartography” award at the National Council for Geographic Education Conference.
